Fort Bragg Food Bank

Providing Nutritious Food on the Mendocino Coast for a Healthier and Better Life

Our Story

Founded in 1979, the Fort Bragg Food Bank is a choice pantry under the non-profit umbrella of the Mendocino Food & Nutrition Program, now known as the Mendo Food Network. Our objective is to distribute food to those who need it most. The Fort Bragg Food Bank is a unique experience for all who come. We pride ourselves on providing a variety of quality food in a dignified way, in a grocery store style.

Since 1993, the home of the Fort Bragg Food Bank has been at 910 N franklin St., a 4,800 square foot warehouse in Fort Bragg, with help from a Community Development Block Grant. We own this facility free and clear. With additional funding from Mazon, S.H. Cowell Foundation, and local donors, we installed walk-in refrigeration, pallet shelving, a kitchen, and purchased forklifts and vehicles. We currently own 2 delivery trucks and a cargo van. We also received funding through a USDA Rural Development agency grant to maintain our facility and to add a weather shelter over our outside produce sorting area.

The Fort Bragg Food Bank serves approximately 1700 client households each month, representing 5000 household members. Clients may pick up food once a week. A typical visit will include fresh produce, a meat or vegetarian protein, a selection of staple dry goods, bread, and other miscellaneous goodies. We also offer a supplementary kids' bag to households with children and a senior box to those 60 years and over. There is also a grab-and-go bag available for those without cooking facilities.

We participate in grocery recovery with many of our local grocery stores, restaurants, and businesses to support our program with various food choices. We collect about 300,000 pounds of recovered food on the Mendocino Coast annually.

Our demographic mix reflects our community: approximately 75% Caucasian, 15% Hispanic, 8% Native American, and 2% other. About 15% of our clients are homeless, 25% are over the age of 60 and 25% of household members are children.

In accordance with Federal law, this organization does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, political beliefs, or disability.

Grab'n'Go Bags

This bag of easy-to-eat food is available at our curbside distribution or in the Choice Pantry. Designed for people who do not have cooking facilities, it contains easy-to-open items like tuna, canned chicken, granola bars, cereal, dried fruit, quick-cooking noodles, soups, and electrolytes.

This program was originally funded with a grant from the Community Foundation of Mendocino County.

Kids Bag Program

This great program, funded by the Lilybeck Foundation, provides families on the Mendocino Coast with a weekly supplemental bag of food. Families do not have to be clients of the food bank; it is available to any family that lives on the Mendocino Coast. The kids' bag has items like granola bars, cereal, chips, crackers, dried fruit, nuts, and other snack items. With this supplemental bag, we hope that our coastal families will always have food to fill their bellies.
